Let me know how you get on if you try this, I would be interested to know. I plan to use a blank 1U 19″ rack mounting case, which will be about £18.
#Diy midi patchbay plus
I have no idea of the cost, if you allow £1.50 for each input, £1 for each output channel, £3 for the power supply, plus the cost of a case and you should be OK. There is no PCB, this is so simple it will be quicker to use matrix board, but if there were to be enough peasants with pitchforks and torches outside the drawbridge I might be tempted to make one in the future. If you want to give it a try then you will have to work out the PIN numbering your self, using the diagram below as a start. Why Banana plugs? Mainly because they are easily stack-able so one input channel can easily drive loads of out puts, but also because I build my modules with 4mm Banana plugs so already have loads in stock. I might even add LEDS to make it look cool. You can add as many channels as you want, I am planning 8 in and 16 out because that is twice the maximum number of devices that I have ever used with my home set up, so think ahead a bit. Sure it isn’t as sophisticated as a solid state one, and the only memory is the one between your ears, but it is cheap, expandable and if built right should be very reliable.

This is just a variant of the DIY MIDI through box that I built a few months ago but rather than one input channel directly connected to multiple output channels I have added more of each which can be interconnected using 4mm patch cables.

I have not actually built this yet, but I described it to somebody over the phone and he made one which worked first time.
